عندما تحول صدام حسين الى الفكر الأسلامي أمر ببناء مسجد كبير في موقع مطار المثنى بكلفة ٥٠٠ مليون دولار في ذلك وقت في حين كان العراق يمر بحالة من الفقر بسبب الحصار الاقتصادي ولم يكتمل بناء هذا المسجد ،
واليوم يعتبر هذا المسجد من أكثر القضايا للفساد المالي وسرقة المال العام لان الحكومة في كل عام تخصص ملايين الدولارات لأنشاء مشاريع وهمية وفي كل مرة يتم دق حجر اساس لمشروع وهمي أخر .
